In the mountains of Colorado Springs, CO, The United States Olympic Paralympic Committee (USOPC) houses thousands of athletes with physical and visual disabilities. Since 1978, they have called this mountain oasis home.

But, in 2022, they determined it was time to upgrade the dining facility. They also needed to do it in ‌a quick Thanksgiving weekend. Could they pull it off?

YEAR-ROUND HOUSING MEANS CONSTRUCTION STRUGGLES

When the USOPC reached out to Kroeschell, they needed help. They needed to update their dining facility with new monitors to showcase the daily menu and nutritional facts. However, something was standing in the way.

They housed athletes year-round, so there was no easy way to update the dining facility that is used every day. The best chance they had to lower the disruption was to plan construction over a short holiday weekend. But what construction company could complete the project in four days over Thanksgiving?

PROJECT MANAGEMENT LOOKS DIFFERENT ON A FOUR-DAY PROJECT

They chose Kroeschell for their ability to finish projects quickly and accurately.

Kroeschell knew they had a long weekend to complete the project, so they started planning early.

They started by value engineering to ensure they streamlined the process. Next, they ordered materials early, working with suppliers they had a tight relationship with to ensure materials arrived on time. Last, they organized the project management process, staff, and materials so they were ready to go for Thanksgiving weekend.

THE PARALYMPIC COMMITTEE BECAME A NEW REPEAT CUSTOMER

The project went off without a hitch. They completed it on time, tested all equipment, and ensured everything worked perfectly before the athletes arrived on campus.

Ultimately, the USOPC were so happy with the results that they invited Kroeschell back to remodel two dorm room suites.
